A lot has happened in the last week but my flu-addled brain is still in processing mode. In lieu of a real post, I'm posting photos of the Black Forest Cake I made for my Dad's 65
th birthday this weekend (well, technically it was his 16 & 1/4
th birthday because he was born on February 29
th.)
Start with 2 chocolate cakes, cut in half to create 4 rounds
Sprinkle the cut sides with a mixture of Kirsch and the juice from a tin of sour cherries
Make a mocha
butter cream frosting
Whip a shameful amount of cream
Layer the cakes with the frosting and the drained cherries
Cover in whipped cream
Top with chocolate shavings
and candles!
Attempt to serve aesthetically pleasing slices, give up when the cake starts to collapse
Happy Birthday, Dad!
Yay, it looks great! I think it would be cool to have/be a Leap day baby. There's a family somewhere out there that had 3 kids all born on leap day 4 years apart, they were in the Guiness Book of World Records I had when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteThat looks so delicious! I'm supremely jealous of your culinary abilities - I wish I was able to make things like that...
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing better than celebrating a birthday with a homemade cake. Mine is in December - you can start planning now! =)
ReplyDeleteWhat a good daughter you are! P.S. I am totally jealous of your mixer. I just burned out the engine of my hand held. Sigh.
ReplyDelete(Wedding registry time this weekend... yesss!)
Mmmm....yummy! Looks delish. Happy birthday Hillary's dad!
ReplyDeleteUm, YUM?! Delicious looking cake!
ReplyDeleteoh man that looks delicious! happy birthday to your dad! :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome cake, lady! Black Forest is one of my favorites, I may have to copy you and make one myself.
ReplyDeleteI heart Black Forest Cake so much, being German and all! It looks delicious! Can you send me your recipe?
ReplyDeleteWhat day does your dad celebrate his b-day on when it's not a leap year? That would be so strange!
Happy Birthday to your Dad!! He's such a sweetheart :)
ReplyDeleteyou found a recipe! and this looks SOOOO yummy!
ReplyDeletei love cherry sauce and cherry flavoring, but NOT squishy canned cherries. fresh or dried cherries are ok.
miss you!
Oh, dear God. I want that for breakfast. Please?
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, that looks SO GOOD. It's not fair to have a post like that without somehow providing samples. :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks like one seriously kick-ass cake. I clicked on one of the pictures, and it looks so moist I seriously wanted to lick my monitor.
ReplyDeleteWhich is creepy enough in itself, and then what if someone caught me doing that?
I didn't. Just so you know.
