Bella's Birthday Cake Was Burning

S turns 3o in May. We've decided to take a week off work and do something fabulous. The problem is that we can't figure out what to do. We went to Vegas for Christmas so it seems a bit redundant to go again in May, though Vegas does seem like the kind of place to celebrate your 30th birthday.

S really wants to go on an Alaskan cruise. (Um, yes I did he say he's turning 30 ... not 80.) I have an ocean-phobia (more specifically, I have a crippling phobia of sharks. I say crippling because it will seriously prevent me from swimming in a lake - a fresh water LAKE - if I can't see the bottom. Because, you know, the sharks will get me.) Cruise ships are huge and I'm pretty sure that it doesn't feel like you're on a boat. Also, the abundance of entertainment and yummy food and, erm, alcohol, would certainly go a long way in making me forget about the sharks stalking our progress. Because you know they would totally be following our cruise ship, just waiting for someone to accidentally fall off *hangs head in shame, knowing that if someone were clumsy enough to fall off a cruise ship, it would be me.* There's a slight possibility that I'm exaggerating this ocean-phobia when trying to persuade S to pick a different holiday. It might be easier to get over my phobia if we were cruising in the Caribbean instead of Alaska (which is silly - I'm sure there are a lot more sharks in the Caribbean than in the Strait of Georgia.)

S is pretty adamant about heading to Alaska and seeing as it's his birthday, unless I can come up with a bitchin' alternative, I'll be bundling up and heading North. I'd really like to take a road trip to Northern California. I've always wanted to go to Redwood National Park and May seems like it would be a good month to do it. S isn't as psyched about the trees (apparently bingo and shuffleboard with the seniors are more his style.)

Suggestions are welcome. Where would you go if you had a week off in May? We'd like to avoid any drastic time changes, so that limits us to North America.

  1. What if you do something beachy and go to Hawaii? It always looks like a really fun place. The Grand Canyon? Mexico = fun and not too expensive!

I hear the Alaskan cruises are pretty cool though. A friend of mine did it and really liked it.

  2. Hey, I found your blog through Thomas' blog. Man, that kid writes a lot. He needs a job. Are you reading this, Thomas? You need a job. :)

Anyway, I like your blog. It's pretty cool. I read through a few of the posts. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

One thing I didn't figure out, probably because I only read about a dozen of your posts, is are you both from Canada or did you move there?

Ok, well, thanks for writing. Keep it up.

  3. May in Alaska isn't THAT chilly. I am DYING to take an Alaskan cruise...And I'm only 23!
My honey is turning 30 this year too, but he refuses to be anywhere but Vancouver for his birthday--even though only like 8 people showed up last time (and it was his champagne birthday, 29 on the 29th-granted he does live in Squamish and it had just snowed, and we all know most Vancouver drivers don't know how to drive in the snow...)
    What about New York?

  4. Hey, dont worry.

The sharks are few and far between in waters that cold.

It's the hypothermia that'll get you. In minutes.

I would recommend not doing a "titanic" on the bow of the ship, eh?

  5. I have the same swimming rule! I will only go in until the point at which I can't see my feet -- because horrible, evil things are lurking there that will bite my toes off.

Personally, I think Alaska sounds wonderful. But since I have Mexico on the brain, how about Cabo San Lucas? It absolutely beautiful and fun and should be a relatively quick trip from Vancouver. You can spend as much or as little as you want - there are super high-end resorts and budget (but still wonderful) choices.

  6. I'm glad I'm not the only one with the crazy swimming rule :)

I really want to go somewhere beachy (that might change as soon as it's not February though.)

  7. My 80 year old grandparents loved their Alaskan cruise. Just saying...

Cory and I vote for either a quiet week in a cabin on the sunshine coast (budget option) or week in San Francisco eating out and every opportunity.

  9. My fear of drowning/sharks is easily number 1 on my Fear List. Granted, my Fear list is HUGE. It's not completely obvious what I'm afraid of, but I'm pretty sure it's not lists...more like life.

What about Mazatlan? I hear it's beautiful and I'm pretty sure there's shuffleboard.
