I'm On The Karma Payment Plan

So I have strep throat again.

It's been a whopping five weeks since the last time I had strep throat.

Today the doctor said I have to start thinking about getting my tonsils removed. Right. I'm sure my boss will be really enthusiastic about me requesting six weeks off work. Have any of you had your tonsils removed? Did it really take six weeks to recover? That seems a bit ... extensive.

So clearly this is karma. I blame everyone who commented on yesterday's post and told me to forget helping my sister move and make better plans. Just kidding. (About the blaming part; I'm totally serious about the karma part.) Though now I have a really good excuse for not helping with the move.

  1. Really?? You poor thing! If I had strep that much, I'd get them taken out no matter what the time off was. I still have mine, so I don't know about recovery time, but 6 weeks sounds a bit overboard. Bryan is having his gallbladder out in 3 weeks, and he only has to take 2 weeks off!

  2. Two things:

First: Yes, I have had my tonsils out. I was young, though. I don't recall it taking too long to recover. But ... I was young.

Second: Maybe it was God's way of giving you an excuse to not help you sister without the guilt.

  3. Yikes! I hope you don't have to go the surgery route. Do you have a blender? I'm all about smoothies when I have a sore throat (though yours seem more extreme than the ones I'm used to).

  4. I've been told I need to get mine out, too. I've had friends who got theirs out and it was about a 2 week recovery for the pain, and a bit longer for the voice to be fully functional again. UGH.

  7. Oh lady that sucks. But if your tonsils do keep giving you a problem every couple of weeks because of infection you probably do need them removed. However 6 weeks sounds a little too overboard. I would think it would take more than 2 weeks (but I'm no doc).

I hope you feel better super soon. *hugs*

  8. Well shoot! When I suggested for you to get something better to do... I didn't mean get sick! Clearly that is not better. I hope you get well soon!

  9. Dude. You need to get them out so you don't get sick anymore!

  10. I had mine out a few years ago and recovered within a week. It really depends on how healthy of a lifestyle you lead and how easily your immune system can bounce back. 6 weeks is incredibly excessive! If your boss has issues with you taking a week off to have your tonsils removed, just say its better than having to take of 2-3 days every 5 weeks due to strep throat. The choice is obvious...

  11. It's hard to believe you'd have to be out of work for six weeks. Maybe the full recovery takes that long, but you'd be able to go back to work after only 1-2 weeks? I'd ask more questions of your doctor! In the mean time, feel better soon!!!!

  12. I had mine out when I was six and haven't had strep throat since.

It only took a few days for me to be feeling totally normal again, but I was six, so YMMV.

I can't imagine you would need more than a week off work, 1.5 tops. It's not like you're being cut open - just having some dangly bits removed.

  13. I MUST comment on this post.
Yes, it DOES take that long to recover. I had mine taken out when I was 22 and I was off work for 2 months. I really don't want to be the person that chimes in with all of this sunshine and moonbeams, but the older you are, the longer the recovery on this surgery.

Upside(s)? Hydrocodone. And massive weight loss. I think I was down to something like 118 when all was said and done.

That being said, as I'm 32 years old now, maybe they've come up with improvements to the surgery and that it won't be nearly as rough for you as it was for me.

  14. Some things to consider:

You will be a much healthier person when it is all said and done.

I've heard a possible complication of the surgery is permanent loss of the ability to taste. (Maybe the worst thing ever?)

I have always been told my tonsils are abnormally large and I might have the same fate as you... so I wanted some tonsil removal procedures on youtube and it is oddly satisfying to watch. In related news, I will never eat another scallop.
