Hey Young Thugs The World Is Yours

I haven't been carded at the liquor store in a long time. The legal drinking age in BC is 19 and I am, well, not 19 so it doesn't bother me. I'm not forcing my driver's licence upon the the liquor store clerk or anything.

So I'm at the liquor store tonight and the checkout clerk looks to be about 12 years old and he's, I don't know, just got this vibe about him. Let's just say that if his shirt had a collar, that collar would have been proudly popped. So I hand over my beer and he asks me how I'm doin', all shmarmy-like. We make small talk as he rings up my purchases and then he tells me he needs to check my id. And I'm all "wtf?" because for one thing, shouldn't he check my id before he rings everything through? Also, I was buying an apricot wheat ale not wine coolers, you know? But whatever, I hand over my driver's licence and he gets all squinty-eyed as he does the math and then he says, "1982? Lookin' good for 1982!" as he hands my id back to me.

Umm ... what the fuck does that mean? Looking good for 1982. I'm 27 years old!

The older gentleman in line behind me actually snorted as I took my card back and paid, silently. I didn't know what to say! I mean, I wasn't offended (it's actually kind of funny) but I was kind of taken aback.

I should have called him a whippersnapper.

  2. Ha! In fairness, they are supposed to card you if you look like you could potentially be under 25. It pisses me off too though. I'm 30, and last time I got carded I was in a feisty mood so as I handed over my ID I asked the girl, "seriously? How old did you think I was?" She blushed beet red as she muttered "I thought maybe 18..."

HOLY SHIT, girl. You deserve to be embarassed for saying that. That's not flattering, that's insulting. (And I *so* do not look 18.)

  3. Yeah, they're supposed to ID you before they ring anything in, otherwise they can get in big doodoo!
The looking good crack was kinda funny. I probably wouldn't have been able to think of anything to say back to him though :S

  4. I never used to get asked for ID when I was 19-22. I get carded more at 24 than I ever have. Perhaps I wear less makeup now? I don't really get it.

  5. When I worked at a grocery store in college, we were supposed to card anyone who looked like they were under 30. I carded a woman who looked like she was 22 or 23. She was 39. She almost danced out of the store. Ever since then, I've decided to have a positive attitude about being carded. If nothing else, it means I shouldn't be thinking about Botox. :)

  7. Hahahahahahahahaha!

    Hahahaha! *wipes tear from eye*

That is absolutely hilARious! I feel so old, suddenly. I can actually remember 1982.

I probably would have given him the *eye* (you know, the one your mother gives you when she's not impressed with you or something you've done) and then I would have asked him for HIS i.d., to make sure he was old enough to work there.

    The little shit.

  8. That was the sad, sad attempt at a pickup line. Pity him, for he is just a puppy.

  9. That's the worst pickup line in the history of EVER. But also prime comedy material :) Thanks for sharing!

  10. Ha! Pretty awesome compliment. I'm 31 and I still get carded because people think I'm in my early 20s. I call this a win!

  15. I had a good snicker at "Lookin' good for 1982." I bet he was born in the... gasp... 90s.

    OX!!!

  16. I think I would've responded with something along the lines of ... "And here I thought you had to be 21 to sell liquor ... clearly, they've dropped that age to 15."

BTW, loving the new design ... can't wait to hear the story behind it!
