Baby, Instant Soup Doesn't Really Grab Me

Hey so remember yesterday when I was all "I have to be at work even though I'm sick. I'm such a trooper. I can tough it out because I'm so strong." Well. That lasted for a few hours. And then it got to the point where I was tearing up every time I swallowed. So I went to the walk-in clinic and was told that I have strep throat (for what feels like the 80th time this year.) And I cried. The poor doctor was so fussed but I couldn't help it. (In my defense, it is a certain time of the month where hearing that one has pus visibly running down one's throat is bound to set one off.) I'm just so frustrated. I feel like I'm always sick. Since getting back from our holiday, Shawn and I have made a huge effort to eat healthier. We've started going to the vegetable market once a week and stocking up on loads of fresh produce. We eat salad at least once a day, usually twice. We've stopped eating at restaurants as much as we used to, we've cut back on the sweet stuff and the salty stuff, we've tried to make healthier versions of the takeout food we love. And yet here I am, back on antibiotics. Clearly I need to eat less leafy stuff and more fried foods.

So I'm hanging out with the puppies today, hoping that I don't get in too much trouble when I go back to work on Monday. And because apparently I am 7 years old, my mom is coming over to take care of me. My mom rocks. She lives 20 minutes away from me (well, 20 minutes for me, with her driving it's more like half an hour) - 2 bridges away from me - but she's still coming over to make me homemade soup.

  1. Oh no! Strep throat is no fun!

Out of curiosity, do you still have your tonsils? I've only gotten strep once since I had mine out (and had constant infections/tonsilitis/etc. before that). If you have tonsils, you might consider talking to a doctor about having them removed.

  2. Oh, Hillary, I'm so sorry. It just sucks to be sick and sick and sick. I wonder if it's the constant stress of your job that has you at some level of worn down all the time? Or something else? I'm glad your mama is coming over to take care of you. It helps no matter how old you are. Hugs to you.

  3. I live five minutes from my parents and still go over there when I'm sick. There's something about my mom's chicken noodle soup that I just can't duplicate.

  4. I got sick in university and called my parents during the middle of the night (while I was puking). My dad jumped in the car and drove THREE hours to take care of me. Parents rock.

  5. I'm so sorry you're so sick! :( That's awesome about your mom, though. I wish I lived close enough for my mom to come take care of me when I'm sick. I still call her when I'm under the weather, though, I think it would hurt her feelings if I didn't. Feel better soon!

  6. One day last summer, when I was super stressed and depressed, I rode the bus to my mom's house, slept for 14 hours, and then got on the bus right back to Kamloops. I don't even get along with her most of the time! Parents are necessary sometimes, especially when you're sick!
Hope you feel better soon, button!

  7. Aww lady that sucks. It's not only eating healthy though. Make sure you always wash your hands whenever you come in from somewhere (soap and water kill off A LOT of germs). Maybe you need to take some vitamin C? And when you do get sick, you really do need to get to rest, or your body will not go back to 100% and you'll keep getting sick.

I really hope you feel better soon. There's nothing better than our moms taking care of us!

  8. I can't believe that you have strep AGAIN.

Your Mom IS awesome. Between you and S, I hope you feel better soon.

  9. i don't even know what they do... it's just a parent's PRESENCE that makes being sick better, somehow. which makes being in a different state than my parents rather annoying, sometimes.

  11. You are sick more than me and that's just not right. You should consider having your tonsils out. I've heard great things. (The recovery is a bitch but then you don't get sick all the time after that.) Feel better, munchkin.

  12. Aww, sorry that you have strep throat. That sounds awful. I haven't had it since I was little, but I know how it just wipes you out. Hopefully you'll feel better enough to enjoy the weekend!

  13. Sorry you're sick. Strep throat sucks! Having a Mom that lives that close and will come cook for you however, does not suck.

    Feel better soon!

  14. Oh, sweetie, I hope the time with your mom made things a little better. And if not, at least you know today is the end of the week and you've got the weekend to continue recuperating. You and me both. Hugs.

  15. What a sweet mom. And nobody with strep throat should be at work, so stop feeling guilty. And feel better.

  16. I recommend treating strep with a plate of fried chicken and a side of funnel cake. I mean, it can't make you feel any worse, can it?
