Give Me Little Bits Of More Than I Can Take

Someone came home from band practice very late last night and someone else thought it was an intruder coming into the bedroom very late last night and let's just say that I am not so much a fan of Shawn and Wolfgang today.

So! Random sleepy thoughts it is.

I need new running shoes. My running shoe purchases have always been determined by which running shoes were on sale. I have made it my summer goal to get back into running but first I need new shoes (my current running shoes are about three years old and are puppy-chewed around the edges.) Which running shoes should I buy? I overpronate like a motherfucker and have narrow-ish feet. Also, I am unwilling to spend more than $200 on running shoes.

Shawn is playing a show this Saturday at the Shark Club. If you're in Vancouver you should come and say hi. I will be the drunk one. Shawn will be the one who looks like this:

yummy

When I lived in England, two very lovely ladies went out of their way to befriend me and make England feel like home. We don't see each other often enough (May 2007 was the last time I saw them) but I love them to bits. One was due with her second child last Saturday and the other is due with her second child this Saturday and I am pretty much busting with excitement and joy. I hope (fingers crossed, knock on wood, and all that jazz) to be able to munch on their wee babies' cheeks sometime next year.

(Speaking of babies, sweet Nilsa has some happy baby news!)

I recently purchased the Camera+ app for my iPhone. I'm in love. If you take photos with your iPhone, you need this app. I often miss the pups being cute because by the time I get my camera they've morphed back into little monsters. My iPhone lets me capture the cuteness and Camera+ helps me edit the pictures. Love it.

love her

him? not so much

After being bounced from doctor to neurologist to sleep specialist, I am seeing a respiratory therapist tomorrow to try to figure out my seizure thing. I'd like to say that I'm optimistic but the truth is that I've been grumbly and blue all week. I've decided that I am going to reward myself for going to the appointment (like a grownup *sigh*) with a new cookbook. I don't know which cookbook, though, so I need some suggestions. Do you have a cookbook that rocks your world with its awesomeness?

  1. I pronate too (strange word, isn't it? Looks like it's always misspelled) and I <3 my New Balances. I'd recommend going into the actual New Balance store and telling them what your issues are. The people who work there are mostly runners, and all really well trained.
As for cookbooks, I'm waiting for a reason to buy "I Know How to Cook".

  2. My friend let me borrow the new Jamie Oliver cook book. It has some recipes that look really good that I'm hoping to try soon.

Hope the respiratory doc can help figure it out!

  3. I love my Nike Airs, but I bought them because they felt good. Running Room is great if you can go.

I *thought* I had that App, but no. Remedied.

No cookbook suggestions but I need a new one too. Am bored of my food.

  4. Stability shoes! I really can't run without getting injured without wearing stability shoes - I over-pronate as well. You might also look into orthotics if you have knee/hip problems when you run.

  5. Normally I can't stand Giada de Laurentis (I kind of hate that she doesn't look like she tries any of the food she cooks) but all of her cookbooks are fabulous.

  6. I really like Adidas shoes. Sometimes they have fantastic sales, which is of course the best time to buy running shoes. It's so frustrating how expensive they can be!

I'm hoping to be able to be there on Saturday night. Still waiting on family to make up their mind on things. Silly family. Hopefully I can make it work! :)

  7. I need new running shoes too! I'll probably take Megan's advice and go to the New Balance store. I've actually never bought well-reserached, pricey running shoes before. Let us know how your shoe search turns out!

  8. I've got the exact opposite feet as you (wide, under-pronate) and I wear Adidas and love them to pieces. I second the suggestion of getting fitted in a specialty running store. You don't have to actually buy your shoes there, and the good ones will tell you what sorts of shoes would work best for your own feet and running gait, and not try to upsell you expensive shoes.

I rarely use cookbooks other than the basic BH&G and JofC, so I'm no help there either. :(

    Man, I fail!

  9. Oooh, oooooh! I know a cookbook!!! A cookbook that kicks it, BIG TIME!!! It's "The Best of Chef at Home", by Mike Smith. So unbelievably awesome, I can't even tell you. I shall be blogging about it extensively, as soon as I put it down long enough to do that.

Re: shoes. Go and get fitted at a specialty running store, like The Running Room. I'm not much of a runner, but I am a walker, and my Asics have saved my life. I never knew you could be so comfortable and feel so safe in shoes.

Also, I feel for you, regarding the canine security alarm. We apparently have a yard full of nocturnal, life-threatening marauders (i.e. raccoons) that we need nightly protection from. Or at least be made aware of. Apparently. At least this time, she's not just barking at the wind, which serves no purpose except to piss me off royally.

  10. Most of my running shoes have been New Balance and I've loved them. I now have a pair of Brooks, which I also absolutely LOVE.

  11. I recently bought a pair of Nike Free(s), and they are UHmazing. As in, I used to run with foot pain, always, and I haven't had a single strange ache or pain (beyond what my out of shape body is going to have to endure to get back INTO shape) since I've started using them. They are lighter than air, for serious.

(Good luck! at your doctor's appointment. Here's to feeling better soon and very soon.)

  12. Head on down to the running room to get shoes. Tell them you need help finding what works for you. They'll make you take off your shoes and walk in your socks so they can see your feet. They'll help you pick what you need. I run in Saucony. :)

My fingers are crossed for your dr's appt!

  13. I haven't found the perfect running shoes. I used to like my Adidas shoes but then I got a weird callous and stopped liking them. I need some new ones, but I run so little anymore.

I'm really hoping they figure out your deal very soon. I can't blame you for being blue.

And I don't really cook (or rather, really don't cook) so no recommendation, alas.

Hugs to you and the wakey uppey puppies.

  14. Dude, I agree with DW. Micheal Smith is AWESOME, and I met him in person when I was in PEI last fall. He's super nice, and SUPER TALL.
Go to a specialty store if you're looking for good ones...since I bought mine for 40 bucks at shoe warehouse :D

  15. Good luck at your doctor's appt! My favorite cookbook right now is Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World!

  16. wow, $200 for running shoes. I didnt even know they made them in that price range.
Adidas are good, only running shoe i will wear. Adidas fit well for those with narrow feet.

  17. Good luck with your appointment love, I really hope they figure everything out soon <3

  18. Oh rewarding yourself sounds great! I would recommend a cook book, but all of mine are vegetarian or vegan- but vegan cupcakes take over the world is an amazing way to make almost no-fat cupcakes :)

For running shoes I've always loved Asics- but from what I've heard the best thing you can do is go to a real running store and have them fit you with shoes. They'll check your arches & watch how you walk and can recommend shoes that will help keep you from developing any problems.

  19. Thanks for the shout-out, love. Man, I've been feeling the love these past few days, that's for sure.

I'll be honest, when I became a "serious" runner, I stopped wearing Nikes. Not sure if any of the running stores carry Nikes now, but it used to be they never did (a sure sign, they're not really a running shoe company).

I over-pronate, too. I tried a bunch of different brands, but have been a New Balance loyalist for years, now. (Here's the shoe I've been wearing: http://www.newbalance.com/products/WR740/).

Also? Super Feet. I swear by them. They're an insert to help with arch support. It takes a few runs to wear them in (and to get used to them), but they really are awesome. I echo what others have suggested, though ... go to a running-focused store where you can try on a number of different brands and even run in the shoes (either outside or on a treadmill). That's the only way you'll find the right fit for you!

  20. I'm horrible. I usually go to the running room to try on shoes (usually 6 to 7 pairs) then sometimes not buy them and find them cheaper somewhere else... ya... mean! I actually have orthodics that I wear in my shoes to keep me stable so I can wear just normal running shoes that don't have anything fancy added, which helps to cut cost (though the orthodics were $350, covered by our lovely medical system, ha!).
Asics and Adidas are lovely. I also REALLY liked Mizunos when I didn't have the orthodics as they do wonders, granted, so do the Asics, though they were slightly more expensive, but also lighter.
I find New balance too heavy, but to each their own.
Cook books? I am a dessert fan... ya... terrible... I admit... so I have the 'bakers bible' which is actually from britan but has millions of amazing recipes!!!

  21. i'd also recommend getting fitted at a running store! they tell you what "kind" of shoes will work best for you (and at the place i went.. um.. roadrunner sports, maybe?) the shoes were all normally priced - $100ish for a good pair. good luck!!

  22. Hey there, thought I'd say hi. It's been a long while since I've been in the blogosphere but I decided to come back. Glad to see you're still going strong with the blogging!

Good luck with the sleep specialist and I hope you get that sorted soon.
